Bridgewater State Hands Lancers Their First Setback in 18-12 Loss

Worcester, MA --- Bridgewater State sophomore attacker Courtney Lennon (Medfield, MA) recorded seven points with six goals and a helper while junior Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA) and second-year Jenny Jones (Framingham, MA) combined for nine tallies to help lift the Bears to a 18-12 victory over Worcester State this evening in NEWLA action at Coughlin Stadium.

BSC, winners of five straight, improve to 5-3 and 2-0 in conference play while the Lancers fall to 3-1 and 2-1 in the NEWLA.

With the game knotted up 1-1 with 16:41 to play, Bridgewater State went on a 4-1 run over the next 12 minutes to take a 5-2 lead as Jones added two goals for the Bears during the stretch.

WSC senior Megan Rosborough (Uxbridge, MA) would score the first of her three goals of the contest with 1:09 remaining in the first before Manning notched an unassisted marker with 19 seconds left to send both teams off the field with the Bridgewater State leading 6-3.

Both teams traded two goals over the first seven minutes of the second stanza (8-5) before BSC scored three straight goals over a five minute stretch - with a pair of tallies coming from Lennon – to put the Bears up six with 18:13 remaining (11-5).

Over the next five minutes Worcester State went on a 4-1 run to make the score 12-9 with 12:57 left in the second period, but that was as close as the Lancers would get. The Bears would then outscore WSC 6-3 over the games last 10 minutes to seal up the victory.

Junior Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, MA) paced the Lancers with a team-best six points with a hat-trick and three assists while senior Shannon Feeley (W. Springfield, MA) added two tallies. Junior Abby Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) and freshman keeper Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) each scooped up three ground balls apiece for WSC.

Sophomore Erin Quimby (Chelmsford, MA) led the Bears defensively as she picked up five ground balls while she caused a game-best four turnovers.

Erickson was tagged with her first loss of the season as she made four saves between the pipes while her counterpart, junior Megan Griffin (Billerica, MA), upped her record to 5-2 and she finished the evening with six stops.

The Bears held advantages in shots (32-22) and ground balls (16-12) while Worcester State committed almost double as many turnovers as BSC did (17-9). There were also nine yellow cards thrown in the contest.

Worcester State will play two away games in the next week starting with UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday at 7 before facing off against Westfield State at 4 PM on Saturday in a NEWLA game. The Bears will entertain Fitchburg State in a conference contest at noon on Saturday.
