Women's Lacrosse Ends Season In Setback To Castleton

Castleton, VT --- Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, CT), Marie VanDerKar (Manchester, VT) and Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, NY) each scored three goals a piece to lead the Castleton State College women’s lacrosse team over Worcester St., 15-11, in New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance action on Saturday.

The Spartans improve to 12-5 overall on the season and will play Westfield St. in the NEWLA Tournament in the semifinal round on May 5 with a time to be determined later. The Lancers finish their season at 5-6 overall.

For Worcester St., Colleen Manning (Plainville, MA) and Kim Vail (W. Newbury, MA) led the Lancers offensively with three goals each. Amanda Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) added two and Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, MA), Carley MacIntyre (Townsend, MA) and Abby Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) pitched in with one marker each. Jamieson helped facilitate the Lancer offense with a game-high two assists.

For Castleton, Stephanie Pearce (Shoreham, NY) and Elizabeth Haggerty (Centerport, NY) scored two goals a piece while teammates Nicole Adams (Rutland, VT) and Aimee Goulette (Baldwinsville, NY) each tallied one goal.

Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, RI) made nine saves to improve to 6-2 overall on the season. Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) stopped six shots in the loss.

Down 2-1 after Manning’s goal at 26:18 in the first half, the Spartans score five unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead. VanDerKar sparked the five goal run with an unassisted tally at 25:25, Goulette found the back of the net at 24:05, Paproski tallied a free position attempt at 23:14, Mazzola scored an unassisted marker at 22:48 and Adams set up Pierce with a beautiful feed at 16:55 to cap off the run.

Amanda Cosenza and Vail answered back for Worcester St. scoring two goals six minutes and four seconds apart to make the score 6-4.

Castleton responded with four unanswered goals spanning over into the second half to take a 10-4 lead at the 29:00 minute mark of the second.

Pearce spearheaded the run scoring a marker with 33 seconds left in the first half and dishing out an assist on Haggerty’s first goal of the game one minute into the second half.

The Lancers followed with four unanswered goals over the next seven minutes and 52 seconds to cut into the deficit at 10-8.

MacIntyre started the run at 26:45 while Jamieson dished out an assist on Vail’s marker at 23:50 and found the back of the net at 22:55 for her only goal of the contest.

The Spartans went on to score the next five-out-of-six goals including two free position attempts from Mazzola and VanDerKar that sealed the victory late in the half.

Castleton went five-for-nine in free position attempts and won the draw control battle 18-10 over Worcester St. The Lancers compiled 30 ground balls besting the Spartans by five in that category.

Abby Cosenza, Amanda Cosenza and Jamieson all finished their careers in the 100 point club as Abby ended with106 points, Amanda tallied 103 points and Jamieson finished her career third overall with 143 points.

The Cosenza twins, Vail, Jamieson along with senior's Veronica Farrell (Baldwinville, MA) and Kaitlyn Byrne (Mashpee, MA) were honored on "senior day" for playing in their last home game.
