Women's Soccer Opens Season With Draw To Colby-Sawyer

Worcester State 0, Colby Sawyer 0   2 OT

New London, NH --- The Worcester State University women's soccer team began their season with a 0-0 tie in double overtime. The contest was the season opener for both teams as the season series is now 1-0-2 in favor of the Lancers.

The first half was controlled by the Worcester State attackers. The Lancers held a 9-2 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corners in the first 45 minutes. The second half was evenly played throughout with both sides getting three shots on target.

The first true chance of the contest came in the 55th minute when Worcester State's Brooke Beckman (Lakeville, MA) snuck the ball past Colby-Sawyer keeper, Allie Piper (Barre, VT), who came out of net to challenge the play. Fortunately for the Chargers, freshman Stephanie Huntley (Woodbury, CT) came in behind the play and booted the ball out of bounds before it had a chance to cross the goal line.

With under a minute remaining in regulation, Worcester State again had a chance to take the lead. Junior Nikki Scott (Berlin, MA) struck the ball from just inside the 18-yard box, but had the ball hit off the crossbar. Scott regained control of the ball and fired another shot, but Piper was up to the task and made the save sending the contest into overtime.

Colby-Sawyer looked for the game-winner in the second overtime on a free kick from Huntley, but Worcester State goalie, Rachael Armenti (W. Boylston, MA) made one of her four saves.

Piper was sensational in the net for the Chargers as she recorded 11 saves while Armenti  stopped all five shots she saw in net. Both keepers continued their stellar play from last season between the pipes as Piper was second in TCCC and nationally ranked with a 0.84 goals against average while Armenti led the MASCAC with seven shutouts.

Worcester State had a frustrating afternoon as they outshot the Chargers 19-7 as they also held a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal. Colby Sawyer held a 5-1 edge in corners.

Worcester State will look for their first win on Saturday when they host Wheaton on Saturday at noon while Colby-Sawyer. The Chargers will entertain Green Mountain tomorrow at 4 PM before they head to Rochester, NY for the Flower City Tournament to play a pair of nationally ranked opponents.
