Women's Soccer Loses To Wheaton In Overtime Heartbreaker

Wheaton 2, Worcester State 1   OT

Worcester, MA --- Wheaton freshman Rebecca Raymond (Lowell, MA) netted in the game-winning goal for her first career marker to help propel the Lyons to a 2-1 non conference overtime triumph over Worcester State this afternoon at Coughlin Field.

Wheaton junior Kaitlyn Mawicke (Trumbull, CT) helped create the game-cliniching shot in less than four minutes into the extra period when she found an empty seam and passed the ball to an open Raymond, who hadn't attempted a shot in the entire contest.

The Lancers (0-1-1) originally had the 1-0 advantage at the intermission when freshman Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) knocked in her first career marker right in front of the net on a feed from junior Christina Vernaci (Saugus, MA) in the 36th minute.

The Lyons (2-0) knotted the score in the 56th minute when senior Emily Hough (Norwich, VT) made a bid at the net off of a corner, but she was denied by senior keeper Rachael Armenti (W. Boylston, MA). Hough's deflection then went to an open sophomore Jordan Muse (Vandia, NH) for her second goal of the season.

It was in the second period and in overtime where Wheaton made their mark as they outshot the Lancers 20-6 in those two periods alone. The Lyons also had a 5-1 edge in corners.

Freshman Kerry Condon (Whitman, MA) recorded two saves in the opening stanza before she gave way to junior Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI) who earned the win in overtime as Leddy added four stops. Armenti would finish with 10 saves for Worcester State.

Both squads will entertain non conference opponents on Tuesday. The Lancers continue their stretch of NEWMAC opponents when they host MIT at 7 PM while Wheaton will face off against Emmanuel.
