Women's Soccer Earns First Victory In 2-1 Win Over MIT

Worcester State 2, MIT 1

Worcester, MA --- Freshman Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) sent in the game-winning goal in the 49th minute to help lift Worcester State University to a 2-1 triumph over MIT this evening in non-conference women's soccer action at Coughlin Field. The Lancers improve to 1-1-1 with the victory while the Engineers fall to 2-1 with the loss.

At the intermission the Worcester State held a slim 5-4 advantage as they finally broke through the Engineer defense when sophomore Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, MA) found Sarah Rafferty (Uxbridge, MA), who charged ahead and sent in her first goal of the season in the 41st minute.

With the game scoreless in the 39th minute, MIT's best chance of the stanza came when junior Alisha Lussiez (Livonia, MI) tried to take advantage of a ball that got by a defender, but her attempt sailed to the just to left of the post.

The Lancers remained aggressive to start off the second period as Gonet launched a 35-yard shot that went right over the keepers head into the net in the 2-0 lead. For Gonet it was her second marker of the season.

The Engineers though would get back into the game 12 minutes later as they took advantage of a free kick. Following a nice boot near the visiting bench, freshman Andrea Park (Irvine, CA) headed a pass to sophomore Leslie Meyer (Brownsburg, IN) who used own skull for her first goal of the year.

MIT remained on the offensive for a majority of the second period as they held a 4-2 shooting advantage for the remainder of the contest. The Engineers had a great chance to knot the score in the 73rd minute on a shot by Lussiez, but freshman Makayla Moran (Leominster, MA) kicked it away at the last second for the team save.

Senior Rachael Armenti (W. Boylston, MA) turned aside four shots in the victory while her counterpart, sophomore Megan Wright (Devon, PA), collected four saves.

MIT had a 12-10 shooting advantage as they also enjoyed a 6-2 lead in corners.
Both teams will play non conference opponents on Saturday. Worcester State will start the first of a three-game road swing with Clark at 1 PM while the Engineers will entertain Southern Maine at 4 o'clock.
