Women's Soccer Blanked by #13 MIT

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State women's soccer team couldn't handle the offensive onslaught of the nation's 13th-ranked team, as the Lancers fell to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by a score of 7-0 in non-conference action at Coughlin Field on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, the Lancers drop to 0-2-0 on the young season, while the Engineers pick up their first win and improve to 1-1-1.

MIT got the offense rolling in the 18th minute, when freshman Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) scored three goals in a span of 51 seconds to give the Engineers a lead of 3-0 in the blink of an eye. The hat trick was the second fastest hat trick in the history of Division III women's soccer.

The Engineers would tally a pair more in the opening half, as goals from Allie Werner (Tyler, Texas) and Lily Bailey (Danvers, Mass.) gave the visitors a 5-0 lead heading to the half.

MIT would get goals from Jessica Sonner (Naperville, Ill.) and Sarah DiIorio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) in the second half to secure the 7-0 victory.

Lancer sophomore Jill Zinkus (Grafton, Mass.) was dealt the loss, despite making nine saves in 45 minutes of action. Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) came on in relief in the second half and made a pair of saves. Lily Mueller (Lakeville, Minn.) and Riley Terando (Folsom, Calif.) combined for the shutout for the Engineers, combining for three saves.

Next up for the Lancers, they will seek win number one when they host Salve Regina at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Coughlin Field. MIT will look to extend their winning streak to two on Wednesday when they take on Lesley at 4 p.m.
