WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's soccer team outshot Framingham State 27-2 and collected a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field. The win was their second straight shutout in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play.
Worcester State (7-6-2, 4-1-1 MASCAC), who blanked Salem State 2-0 last Saturday, now has six shutouts on the season.
Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) scored the game's lone goal in the 64th minute, her fifth of the season and second game-winner, both tops on the team.
Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) needed to make just one save to collect the fifth shutout of her senior season.
Megan Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass.) and Leah Fitzgerald (Upton, Mass.) got the two assists on Maldonado's goal. Fitzergald fed the ball in front of the net, and it grazed off Gurlitz's foot before Maldonado stepped in and sailed it into the left side of the net.
Freshman goalie Jetta Oskirko (Lancaster, Mass.) made 11 saves but fell to 5-7 between the pipes for Framingham. In addition to a 12-1 edge in shots on goal, Worcester State had a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.
The first half had few scoring opportunities. WSU had a chance when Hailey Skowronski (Douglas, Mass.) took a shot that almost went over the goal line but FSU stepped in front of it just in time to save it. On the rebound, Gurlitz took a shot that was blocked by the Rams.
Camryn O'Leary (Leicester, Mass.) had the lone shot on goal for the Rams, who fall to 5-10-1 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
The Lancers will travel to UMass Dartmouth on October 27th for a 7:00 pm non-conference game.
Framingham State hosts Fisher at 4:30 PM on Thursday afternoon.
