Lancers Drop Grudge Match as Owls COmplete Second Half Comeback

Worcester, MA- In a bid to continue to push the losses away from their record, the Worcester State Women's Soccer team (2-4-1, 0-1) was focused on avenging a post season loss in this afternoons matchup with Westfield State. The Lancers took the Owls to the final moments last year in the MASCAC semifinals and will be looking for a different ending today back on the Owls home turf.

Final
Worcester State: 2

Westfield State: 3

How it Happened:

The Lancers were all fire in the opening half of action in the grudge match with the Westfield Owls getting the first attempt with junior Ella Tatarczuk (Bedford, MA) finding the first piece of the ball. Her initial attempt was saved but her second attempt in the 23rd minute would open up the scoring as Worcester grabbed an early 1-0 lead.  Just eight minutes later after a flurry of attempts by both squads sophomore Amanda Cosco would connect with a dish from senior Raelyn Callahan (Pepperell, MA) to jump to an early 2-0 lead. Westfield though was not going to let Worcester get out of their grip, knocking in a goal of their own just a minute later to cut the lead to a single goal into the halftime break after a late penalty kick was saved by sophomore Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA).

It would take just over a minute into the second half for the Owls to tie up the game as they collected a shot from sophomore Ava Lemanski (Clinton, MA) and quickly transitioned down the field to pop in goal number two. While Worcester was still working to resettle their structure after the tying goal, Westfield was able to sneak in the lead goal to take a 3-2 lead with nearly 30 minutes of action still to go. The Owls and Lancers would spend the remainder of the time trading shot for shot, but the Owls defense would button down and keep Worcester from adding any further goals as the Lancers would fall in a similar fashion to last year's semi final 3-2.

Gumienny would end the day with six saves while Lemanski would end with six shots on goal for Worcester in the loss.

What's Next:

Worcester State (2-5-1, 0-2) will now have a few days of rest before coming home to face Western Connecticut in an out of conference battle under the lights at 7pm on Coughlin Field.
