
Worcester, MA --- Western Connecticut took home victories in five singles matches and two sets in doubles play to defeat Worcester State, 7-2, this afternoon in Little East Conference action at Clark University. With the win the Colonials improve to 6-4 and 4-3 in the conference play while the Lancers slip to 5-6 overall and 1-6 LEC.
Senior Lauren Post (Danbury, CT) and junior Alyssa Hoynack (Old Lyme, CT) started off the match for Western Connecticut with an 8-0 triumph at first doubles before third-year Alison Mahoney (Bristol, CT) and sophomore Ashley Gorelik (Brookfield, CT) paired to post a 8-4 win at second doubles. The Lancers would gain a point at third doubles as sophomore Jackie Shaw (Uxbridge, MA) teamed with freshman Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) for the 8-4 victory.
Post, Hoynack, Mahoney, and junior Elizabeth Bonnacci(Danbury, CT) all nearly swept their opponents as only Gorelik only had trouble dispatching of sophomore Mariah Tangney (W. Boylston, MA) at fourth singles with scores of 6-1 and 6-4. Michanczyk earned the win as the sixth seed for WSU as she won 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) with the tie-breaker.
Worcester State will visit Clark on Wednesday in a 5 PM matchup under the lights while Western Connecticut will travel to Hartford to take on St. Joseph of Connecticut on Thursday at 3:30 PM.
