Little East Conference Announces 2015 Women's Tennis Major Awards and All-Conference Teams
Pawtucket, R.I. - Plymouth State University senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) has repeated as the Little East Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year. Jakubas, who also was named LEC Rookie of the Year as well as Player of the year in 2014, returns to collect the honor as the Major Award and All-Conference selections were named on Tuesday afternoon. Jakubas, who was undefeated in LEC singles play, went 11-1 overall during the 2015 PSU Women's Tennis fall campaign, while earning a 6-2 record with her doubles partner, freshman Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.). The duo earned LEC First Team Doubles honors for their work together.
UMass Dartmouth freshman Jenna Lahaie (Lakeville, Mass.) was named Rookie of the Year for her first-season performance in the conference. Lahaie went 10-6 on the season and 6-2 in LEC action in singles play in her first year with the Corsairs. She also put up a solid performance with her doubles partner Maggie LeBrun (Mattapoisett, Mass.) to garner honors from the LEC as Second Team Doubles selections with their 4-3 record in league play.
Rhode Island College head coach Adam Spring was named Coach of the Year by his peers. Spring, in his fourth year with the Anchorwomen, led the program to an undefeated LEC Regular Season Championship (8-0) this fall, with an overall record of 12-3 for the season. In 2013 he was named LEC Coach of Year for taking his team to a 14-3 overall record and 7-1 mark in the conference.
Rounding out LEC First Team Singles selections were RIC teammates senior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) who went 7-0 in LEC action and 10-3 overall, and sophomore Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) who put forth a 6-1 record in conference action and 9-4 slate on the season. Sophomore Sunny Jakubas (Califon, NJ) from PSU was also named for her work in the #2 singles position, going 6-1 in LEC action and 9-1 overall. Her only loss on the year was against Campanella in a three-set thriller. Junior Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) from Worcester State rounded out the first team singles selections for her role as the top flight singles player for the Lancers, who went 7-6 on the season and 4-3 in LEC play.
