SANDERSON CAPTURES DIII NEW ENGLAND CROWN

Worcester, Mass. – Qualifying members of the Worcester State University Track and Field team competed in the DIII New England Track and Field Championship on the campus of Williams College in Williamstown, MA this weekend, May 5-7th. At the event, senior Riley Sanderson (Leominster, MA) captured the title of New England Champion in women's javelin.

Sanderson's toss of 39.48m was good for a team and a New England best. Sanderson has won this discipline four times this season, including the previous weekend at the MASCAC Championships where she threw a massive distance of 42.66m.

The top three finishers in women's javelin included Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Abigail Calistra (38.79m) and Bowdoin College's Corinne Ahern (36.60m).

The women's 4x100m relay team of Elena Pellegrini, Heather Turner, Maureen Grady and Avonia Herbert had an 8th place finish. Grady also had a season best, 5.21m in women's long jump, earning her an 18th place finish. Pellegrini also ran a 13.10 in the women's 100m dash.

Drew Fottler (Chelmsford, MA), also placed over the Championship weekend with a 10th place finish in the men's 3,000m steeplechase. Fottler ran a time of 9:51.94 in the event.
