Volleyball Posts 3-0 Victory Over Anna Maria

Paxton, MA --- Sophomore Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) paced Worcester State with a contest-best 16 assists as the Lancers posted a 3-0 triumph over Anna Maria on the road this evening in non-conference women's volleyball action.

WSU handed the AMCATS three straight defeats by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-11. With the win the Blue and Gold improve to 4-6 overall and the hosts dip to 1-5.

For the visitors, sophomore Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) and senior Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA) both finished with six kills each as freshman Kaylee Leduc (Swansea, MA) pitched in with four digs and a trio of service aces.

Anna Maria was paced by junior Kayla Cummings (Auburn, ME), who led all players with seven kills, and classmate Kelly Delaney (Charlton, MA)) added five digs. First-year Samantha Parker (Athol, MA) also dished out 14 assists in the setback.

Worcester State took and early 10-4 edge in the first game with help from four straight points by Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, MA). An ace by Parker cut the deficit to five points (14-9), but the Lancers were too strong down the stretch outscoring Anna Maria 7-3 to finish out the first set.

In the second set, the hosts held a slim 10-9 advantage after three straight points by Delaney.

With the game tied 14-14, Worcester State tallied four consecutive points to take over a 18-14 margin. Anna Maria crept to within two points (22-20), but Worcester State pulled away for the 25-20 win.

Behind junior Vicki O'Brien's (Canton, MA) strong serving, the Lancers jumped out quickly to a 9-2 score in the third set. The AMCATS couldn't get their offense in gear and the Lancers built up the lead for the final score.

Anna Maria returns to the courts on Saturday afternoon when they travel to St. Joseph's of Maine for a conference match-up with the Monks beginning at 11 AM and a non-conference tilt with Framingham State slated for 1.

Worcester State will also be scoring a tri-match on Saturday when they travel to Southern Maine University to battle UMass-Dartmouth at 2 PM and the hosting Huskies at 4 o'clock.
