During your years in school, you are taught not only how to master English, but you can also have the opportunity to study a foreign language. For Meghan Deighan of Worcester State, Spanish has been not only something she has studied in college but, it has helped her for work in her future career.

The senior from Lynnfield, Mass. is studying nursing and Spanish as a student while also doubling as a member of the Lancers volleyball team. During her time as a student-athlete, she has learned many important life skills such as time management and organization mainly because of her need to be on time for class and practice schedules. She credits the exercise she receives from playing volleyball as an amazing stress reliever from school.

One of her favorite experiences since the beginning of her college career was having the chance to study abroad in Granada, Spain last spring. She was able to master her Spanish fluency while also volunteering in a hospital, shadowing a nurse and working in a home for mentally and physically disabled citizens. While in Europe, she was able to visit nine countries and 29 cities which made a lasting impression on her.

As a member of the volleyball team, Deighan has tallied 57 kills and 21 total blocks this season. Beyond what the team does on the court, they volunteered through the honors program at Worcester State in gym class at the Chandler Magnet Elementary School in Worcester, MA. She was also able to volunteer in the classrooms at the school. Speaking to the students in both English and Spanish made the experience even more beneficial.

Nearing graduation, Deighan plans to use all the skills she has obtained while a Lancer to work in the nursing field. She is hoping that in the next five years to be working in Boston as a NICU nurse. This dream is something she knows she can obtain with the support of her parents who have always taught her to believe in herself.
