4x4 Volleyball Rules

Team Roster: Each team is made up of 4 players. It is necessary to have at least 3 players to start and continue play.

Rock, paper, scissors will decide which team will have the choice of serving first or selecting sides of the court

Scoring:

  • Matches are best of three games
  • Each game will be played to 25 points, win by two, capped at 30 points. If a third game is necessary, it will be played to 15, win by two, capped at 20 points
  • Scoring is rally scoring

Service:

  • The server has 5 seconds to serve the ball, once they are beckoned in by the official or they lose the serve
  • The server may serve anywhere behind the end line. Stepping on or over the end line prior to service is a foot fault
  • You cannot block or attack a serve
  • Serving out of Rotation:
    • If you are the serving team-the serve goes to the other team and all points from the illegal rotation are removed
    • If you are the receiving team-no loss of points, serving order is corrected

General Play:

  • If any part of the ball lands on the boundary line it is considered in
  • The ball may be hit with any part of the body on or above the knee provided it is done with clean contact
  • All passes must be cleanly hit, not thrown, lifted, carried or double hit
  • A back line player may strike providing that they take off from behind the 10 foot line
  • A ball may be played up to 3 times on one side providing the same player does not touch the ball twice in succession
  • A ball hit simultaneously by two teammates is considered one hit and either player may make contact for the second touch
  • A player may go outside the court to play a ball as long as the ball is contacted on that player’s side of the court. It must cross the net between the antennas to be a legal return

Rotation/Player Movement:

  • The rotation ordered specified by the starting lineup each game must be maintained throughout the game. If there are substitutes they must enter in the same position for every substitution
  • Substitutes may only enter on a rotation
  • Players must begin each point in the correct rotation, once the ball has crossed the net they may move wherever they wish on the court

Net Play:

  • When simultaneous contact by opposing players occur, either player may contact the ball again if it fall on their side of the net. Blocks do not count as 1 of your 3 hits
  • If a player’s action causes the player to contact the net during play, it is a fault
  • Players are not permitted to cross over the centerline during play
  • Hands may follow through over the net so long as their offensive attack has been completed
