4x4 Volleyball Rules
Team Roster: Each team is made up of 4 players. It is necessary to have at least 3 players to start and continue play.
Rock, paper, scissors will decide which team will have the choice of serving first or selecting sides of the court
Scoring:
- Matches are best of three games
- Each game will be played to 25 points, win by two, capped at 30 points. If a third game is necessary, it will be played to 15, win by two, capped at 20 points
- Scoring is rally scoring
Service:
- The server has 5 seconds to serve the ball, once they are beckoned in by the official or they lose the serve
- The server may serve anywhere behind the end line. Stepping on or over the end line prior to service is a foot fault
- You cannot block or attack a serve
- Serving out of Rotation:
- If you are the serving team-the serve goes to the other team and all points from the illegal rotation are removed
- If you are the receiving team-no loss of points, serving order is corrected
General Play:
- If any part of the ball lands on the boundary line it is considered in
- The ball may be hit with any part of the body on or above the knee provided it is done with clean contact
- All passes must be cleanly hit, not thrown, lifted, carried or double hit
- A back line player may strike providing that they take off from behind the 10 foot line
- A ball may be played up to 3 times on one side providing the same player does not touch the ball twice in succession
- A ball hit simultaneously by two teammates is considered one hit and either player may make contact for the second touch
- A player may go outside the court to play a ball as long as the ball is contacted on that player’s side of the court. It must cross the net between the antennas to be a legal return
Rotation/Player Movement:
- The rotation ordered specified by the starting lineup each game must be maintained throughout the game. If there are substitutes they must enter in the same position for every substitution
- Substitutes may only enter on a rotation
- Players must begin each point in the correct rotation, once the ball has crossed the net they may move wherever they wish on the court
Net Play:
- When simultaneous contact by opposing players occur, either player may contact the ball again if it fall on their side of the net. Blocks do not count as 1 of your 3 hits
- If a player’s action causes the player to contact the net during play, it is a fault
- Players are not permitted to cross over the centerline during play
- Hands may follow through over the net so long as their offensive attack has been completed
