Five Lancers Earn MASCAC Weekly Awards

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Five Worcester State University student-athletes have received weekly awards from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, brought to you by GEICO. The announcement came from the conference office on Monday evening.

Representing the men's indoor track & field team were MASCAC Rookie of the Week Patrick Carleton (Tewksbury, Mass.) and MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.). Senior Brittany Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) was named MASCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, while freshman Ryan Hoff (Brockton, Mass.) won his second straight men's ice hockey Rookie of the Week Award, and senior defenseman Cody Weaver (West Greenwich, R.I.) was named men's ice hockey Player of the Week.

Five MASCAC weekly awards in one week matches the season-high for the Lancers. Worcester State also received five weekly awards on October 8.

Carleton was named the MASCAC Individual Champion in the mile run with a time of 4:33.04 at Saturday’s MASCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. He was the only Lancer rookie to win an individual title.

Also representing the men's indoor track & field team, Vieira had a strong showing at the MASCAC Championships on Saturday. He won the weight throw with a heave of 17.11m (56’1.75”), and finished second in the shot put with a throw of 14.94m (49’0.25”).

Herring had a monster week for the Lancers, averaging a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds per game in two games. In a loss on Saturday, Herring scored a career-high 32 points while also pulling down 15 rebounds. She shot an other-worldly 80 percent on the week on 20-for-25 shooting.

Hoff, a freshman goaltender on the Worcester State men's ice hockey team, helped the Lancers to three out of a possible four points on the week as the MASCAC regular season draws towards its end. Hoff led the Lancers to a 1-0-1 week, making 27 saves in each of his two contests for a 2.40 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.

Weaver became the first defenseman to claim MASCAC Player of the Week honors since December 11, 2017 with four points on the week, all coming in a dramatic 4-3 win over Westfield State last Thursday. Weaver tallied two goals and two assists, including a helper on the game-winning goal with 3.4 seconds left on the clock.

For Carleton, it is his indoor track & field weekly award of the season, but he previously won the same award for men's cross country four times. Vieira claims his fourth MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week Award, Hoff his second MASCAC weekly award, and Herring and Weaver their first of the season.
