Five Lancers Nab MASCAC Weekly Awards

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Five Worcester State University student-athletes, representing five teams, received Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Weekly Awards this week, brought to you by GEICO.

Leading off the awards for the Lancers was sophomore Talia Borci (Leicester, Mass.), who was named the MASCAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week. Borci scored both regulation goals before assisting on the game-winner in overtime in the Lancers' 3-2 win over Bridgewater State on Saturday to help them remain undefeated in league play.

Freshman Patrick Carleton (Tewksbury, Mass.) was named the MASCAC Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. Carleton was the first Lancer to cross the line, finishing 15th at the James Earley Invitational with an 8k time of 26:33.49. The Lancers have now won the MASCAC Rookie of the Week award for men's cross country each of the four times the team was eligible for the award this season, as Drew Fottler (Chelmsford, Mass.) took home the title last week.

Freshman Brodie Coughlin (North Brookfield, Mass.) was the second Lancer to be named MASCAC Men's Golf Rookie of the Week in as many weeks on Monday. Coughlin finished five shots off the pace with a score of 82 at the MASCAC Men’s Golf Championship then shot 172 over the weekend at the Blazer Invitational, recording an 85 and an 87. Fellow rookie Jake Poitras (Harwich, Mass.) took the award a week ago.

Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) became the third Worcester State volleyball player to be named MASCAC Women's Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday, joining fellow seniors Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) and Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.). Nolan averaged 30.67 assists, four digs, three kills and 1.67 service aces in a 2-1 week for the Lancers. She had 37 assists, seven digs, three kills and a service ace in the 3-0 win over Becker College on Tuesday, and became the Worcester State all-time assist leader with her 2,306th of her career with 15 assists plus two digs and five kills in the 3-0 setback to WPI. She finished the week with 40 assists, four service aces and three digs in the 3-1 win over Regis College. 

Rounding out the awards this week for the Lancers was senior Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.), who was named the MASCAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week on Monday for the second time this season. Rogers finished in third place in a field of 214 runners with a 5k time of 18:38.07, helping the Lancers to a fifth place finish at the James Earley Invitational, hosted by Westfield State.
