Worcester State Places 84 Student-Athletes on Winter 2018 MASCAC All-Academic Team

Winter 2018 All-Academic Team

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University Athletic Department has placed 84 student-athletes on the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) winter 2018 All-Academic team, as announced by the league Wednesday (Mar. 28) afternoon.

 

Student-athletes that compete in championship varsity sports offered by each of the MASCAC institutions during the course of the Winter 2018 athletic season and have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based grade point average during the semester are eligible for selection to the Winter All- Academic Team.

 

Worcester State’s women’s basketball and women’s indoor track & field teams had the highest percentage of student-athletes make the All-Academic team (93% and 81%, respectively) while 4-of-5 winter Lancer teams held a cumulative team GPA of a 3.00 or higher.

 

“I continue to be impressed with our student-athletes not only for their athletic skills, but their accomplishments in the classroom,” commented Worcester State Director of Athletics, Michael Mudd. “As a Division III institution, we put a high importance on academics and these young adults are a true test to the definition of a STUDENT-athlete.”

 

A total of 415 student-athletes have been honored by the MASCAC. Westfield State University placed the most student-athletes on the Winter 2018 MASCAC All-Academic Team with 101 total, while Worcester State University is second with 84, Bridgewater State University is close behind in third with 83, Fitchburg State University is fourth with 56 and Salem State University is fifth with 39 student-athletes on the team.

 

“I want to applaud all of the student-athletes who were named to the MASCAC Winter 2018 All-Academic team,” Commissioner Angela Baumann said. “Success in the classroom is as important as success on the playing field and our student-athletes exemplify that as shown by the number of them on this team.”
