Santos and Weeks Earn MASCAC Player of the Week Honors (Feb. 22-28)

WORCESTER, Mass. – Alex Santos (Lawrence, Mass.) of the men’s basketball team and Sam Weeks (Methuen, Mass.) of the men’s indoor track & field team earned Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) weekly awards for the week ending Feb. 28.

 

Men’s Basketball:

Santos earned his tenth (fifth-consecutive) MASCAC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week award.

 

Santos scored a team-high 23 points with seven rebounds and six assists in the Lancers’ 91-90 overtime setback to Westfield State.

 

The freshman guard finished the regular season averaging 13.8 points per game while shooting 76 percent from the free throw line.

 
 

 

Men’s Indoor Track & Field:

Weeks earned his fifth men’s indoor field athlete of the week award this season for his performance this past weekend.

 

Weeks finished in seventh place in the shot put at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships. He was one of two Division III finishers in the top eight, making a personal record throw of 15.44m.

 

“Sam has responded well to the pressure of competing at the highest levels,” commented head coach Al Halper. “This week featured the best in all three divisions in New England and Sam was up to the task gaining All Division New England honors. He can only continue to excel as his work ethic and determination drives him week to week.”



Honor Roll:

Junior guard, Bilal Shakir (Worcester, Mass.) collected 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and a steal in the 91-90 overtime loss to Westfield State in the MASCAC Quarterfinals.

 

Freshman center, Britt Herring (W. Brookfield, Mass.) finished with a game-high 22 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks while shooting 60 percent (9-15) from the field in the Lancers’ 55-45 MASCAC Quarterfinals setback to Bridgewater State. The double-double marked her 11th of the season.

 

Joe White (Wonder Lake, Ill.) scored a goal and assisted on another in the Lancers’ 9-3 setback to Salem State.
