Worcester State Headlines WACBA Rookies of the Week

WORCESTER, Mass. – With another week of college basketball in the books, it is time to unveil this week’s Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) honor roll, including our players and rookies of the week.

 

Men’s Player of the Week: Irving Eggleston (Sr.), Nichols (East Lyme, Conn.): Eggleston averaged 18.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 4.0 spg, and 2.7 apg as the Bison went a perfect 3-0 last week. He dropped in 20 points in a win over UNE in a rematch of last season quarterfinal round, then made 23 points in a come-from-behind win over Gordon. Eggleston closed the week with 12 points and seven steals at Curry, a game in which the starter did not play long into the second half. He is second in the CCC in scoring at 21.1 ppg.

 

Men’s Rookie of the Week: Alex Santos (Fr.), Worcester St. (Lawrence, Mass.): Santos registered a career-high 32 points and broke a Worcester State all-time record in three point shots made in a single game Saturday afternoon in the 93-81 victory over Fitchburg State.  He drained nine 3-pointers at a 69.2 3-point field goal percentage against the Falcons. The remaining points scored were made from the free-throw line, as he went 5-for-6 (83.3%). He also added in two assists, two rebounds, a steal and a block.

 

Women’s Player of the Week: Ama Biney (So.), WPI (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name): Biney averaged 14 points and six rebounds as the Engineers pushed their winning streak to 14 games with conference victories over Smith and Coast Guard last week.  The sophomore posted team-highs of 14 points in both contests, while finishing a rebound short of a double-double in the road victory at Coast Guard.  Biney also chipped in with four steals and a pair of assists on the week.

 

Women’s Rookie of the Week Britt Herring (Fr.), Worcester St. (W. Brookfield, Mass.): Herring registered a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds in the 74-35 MASCAC win Saturday afternoon against Fitchburg State. Against the Falcons, Herring shot 54.5 percent from the field and went 87.5 from the free-throw line. She also recorded three blocks on the defensive end against Fitchburg. Earlier in the week, Herring netted two points, four rebounds, two assists, and one block in the Setback to Keene State.

 

 

Honor Roll:

Kamali Bey (So.), Assumption (Springfield, Mass.): Bey averaged 14.5 points, six rebounds and one block per game while shooting 50 percent from the field for the week. Highlighting his week was a 16-point performance at home vs. New Haven on Saturday.

 

Kelly Conley (Sr.), Assumption (Ellington, Conn.): In a 1-1 week, Conley averaged 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, three assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 16-of-20 from the free throw line. Highlighting her week was a team-best 17-point performance in a home win over New Haven on Saturday.

 

Kareem Davis (Fr.) Becker (Lowell, Mass.): Davis set a Becker record with eight three pointers in a 64-61 victory over Regis College on Thursday. Davis finished with a game-high 28 points for the Hawks, including four crucial free-throws in the final seconds of the game. Davis averaged 14.5 points per game this past week with eight steals and five assists.

 

Luca McCormick (Fr.) Clark (Bradenton, Fla.): McCormick averaged 15.5 points and 6.0 rebounds off the bench in a 1-1 week for the Cougars. In a 62-57 win over Emerson on Wednesday, McCormick recorded his third game this season with 20 points or more when he racked up a game-best 20 on 7-for-11 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Then in a 74-63 loss at Coast Guard, he finished with 11 points and three rebounds in 19 minutes.

 

Kwame Lee (Sr.) Fitchburg St. (Brockton, Mass.): Lee averaged 15.5 points, ten rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks per contest for the Falcons in a 1-1 week. He registered 18 points, nine caroms, three blocks, two assists and a steal in an 85-77 win over Bridgewater State on Wednesday before adding a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards to go along with five steals, two assists and one block in a 93-81 setback to the Lancers of Worcester State on Saturday.

 

Marcos Echevarria (Fr.) Nichols (Lynn, Mass.): Echevarria averaged 17.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.7 apg, and 1.3 spg as the Bison went 3-0 last week. He scored 21 of his 25 points in the first half of a win over UNE on Tuesday. Four days later, he scored 21 on 8-of-14 shooting (57 percent) to go with four rebounds, four assists, and two steals at Curry on Saturday. Echevarria is third in the conference in scoring at 18.7 ppg.

 

Sean Doncaster (Jr.), WPI (Medford, Mass.): Doncaster stuffed the stat sheets totaling 20 points, 14 assists, 11 rebounds, four steals and a block as the 12th-ranked Engineers split a pair of NEWMAC contests last week. 

 

Bilal Shakir (Jr.), Worcester St. (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech): Shakir netted 25 points and added in five shots from behind the arc in the 93-81 win over Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon. The junior went 10-for-16 (62.5%) overall from the field and registered seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

 

Brianna Hackett (So.), Worcester St. (Hollis, N.H.): Hackett averaged 14.5 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals in a 1-1 week for the Lancers. She scored 12 points in the setback to Keene State, and then registered 17 points in the 74-35 victory over Fitchburg State.
