Box Score

Winter Haven, FL --- Sophomore right-hander Bobby DeVito (Webster, MA) hurled his first victory of the season while junior Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, MA-CF/RF) drove in a pair of runs as the Worcester State baseball team was victorious in a 3-1 decision over Hamilton College this afternoon. The Lancers improve their record to 5-4 while the Continentals slip to 2-3.

DeVito was effective over his seven innings of work as he threw just 94 pitches. DeVito also gave up just one run with six hits while he struck out five (four looking) and gave up two walks.

Second-year Brendan Rafalski (New Canaan, CT) was tagged for his first loss of the year after he went five innings yielding all three runs on four hits while he issued a pair of walks to go along with two strikeouts.

WSC senior Matt Hart (N. Easton, MA-DH) led off the top of the first with a single through the right side and he then promptly stole second. After Hart moved over to third on a fly to centerfield, Caparell produced a run scoring on a ground-out to put the Lancers up 1-0.

After Devito retired 13 the first 18 batters he faced – which included two by way of pickoff – Hamilton pushed across their first run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore Justin Atwood (Wellesley, MA-DH).

Worcester State answered with a two-run frame in the sixth to take control of the game. Junior TJ Magnell (Leominster, MA-3B) drew a lead-off walk and then Caparell plated him with a double to right center for the go-ahead run. Caparell then moved to third on a ground-out and crossed the plate for some insurance on a fielder’s choice.

Junior Kevin Hayes (Medford, MA) relieved DeVito and pitched a scoreless eighth for the Lancers before classmate Joey Lucier (Brockton, MA) took the mound in the ninth for some extra work before his start on Saturday against St. Thomas. Lucier snapped up a rocket line drive to start the inning and then finished with the second save of his career.

WSC freshman Jake Sanderski (Millbury, MA-LF) went 2-for-3 with two steals while Hamilton was led by sophomore Joe Buicko (Altamont, NY-LF) and junior Grady Vigneau (Stowe, VT) notched a pair of base-hits.

The Blue and Gold will play McDaniel (MD) tomorrow at 12:30 and senior Craig McBride (Attleboro, MA) gets the nod in his second start of the 2009 campaign.
