Box Score

Winter Haven, FL --- Worcester State committed three miscues in a seven-run third inning and McDaniel College pounded out 15 hits as the Green Terror defeated the Lancers 10-5 on Friday afternoon. WSC evens out their record to 5-5 while McDaniel improves to 7-4 on the season.

Facing the top of the order in the bottom of the third, senior Craig McBride (Attleboro, MA) allowed the first two runners to reach on a single and a throwing error to first. After senior Harold Baines (St. Michaels, MD-RF) put McDaniel up 1-0 on a solo bag, McBride loaded the bases on a walk following a strikeout. Fourth-year Troy Tipton (Hanover, PA-DH) then came through for the Green Terror as he hit a three-run double to left with the last two runs scoring on a high throw that came in from the infield.

McDaniel scored three more runs in the frame taking advantage of another infield miscue as freshman Kyle St. Thomas (Bridgewater, MA) came into the game and stopped the bleeding after allowing just one runner on a ground-out.

Worcester State clawed their way back into the game with four runs over the next two innings highlighted by a solo home run by junior Tyler Magnell (Leominster, MA-3B) in the fourth and a two-run dinger by classmate Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, MA-RF) in the fifth to bring the Lancers within three runs of the lead (7-4).

But the Blue and Gold wasted opportunities in the sixth and seventh to close the gap. In the seventh WSC took advantage of an infield error, plating a run and putting runners on second and third with one out, but Worcester State sent a runner home too early and grounded out to end the inning.

The Green Terror touched St. Thomas for a pair of runs in the sixth and senior Andy Cunningham (Leicester, MA) for another in the seventh to break the game open for the Green Terror.

McDaniel junior Brian Rosato (Narvon, PA) earned his second victory of the season as he tossed five innings giving up just four runs on six hits. Rosato also tallied five strikeouts and walked one batter. Freshman Danny Snight (Silver Spring, MD) helped shut the Lancers down over the last four innings as he picked up his first save allowing a run on three hits.

McBride’s record drops to 1-2 in the setback in 2 1/3 innings of work as he yielded seven runs (four earned) on seven hits. McBride also registered four strikeouts and two walks in his second start of the 2009 campaign.

Caparell, senior Matt Hart (N. Easton, MA-CF) and junior Nick Dortona (Malden, MA) each went 2-for-4 and combined for four runs scored and three RBIs.

Tipton went 3-for-5 as he crossed the plate once and added a plated run while Baines and junior classmates Jon Zimmerman (Princeton, NJ-2B) and Andrew Worm (Easton, MD-1B) each notched a pair of hits for McDaniel.

The Lancers close out their annual Florida trip against St. Thomas College (MN) in a double-header tomorrow at 1 PM. Junior classmates Joey Lucier (Brockton, MA) and Mike Borowiec (Spencer, MA) take the hill for the Blue and Gold against the number 26th team in the latest D3Baseball.com poll.
