Box Score

Newport, RI --- The Salve Regina University baseball team scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to post a 4-3 win over Worcester State College in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The win snaps the Lancers 10-game winning streak and gives the Seahawks their fourth win in their last six contests.

With the Seahawks (12-18) trailing 3-2 entering the eighth, junior Riley Diaz (Miami, Fla.) opened the frame with a single through the right side. Sophomore Brendan Tapley (Warwick, R.I.) followed with a single to right field that went past junior Nick Caparell (North Attleboro, MA), allowing Diaz to score from first and tie the game. Senior Will Pearce (New Fairfield, CT) then plated Tapley - the go-ahead run - on an RBI groundout to first.

The Lancers (18-10) did not go quietly in the ninth as the first two batters in the inning - junior Nick Dortona (Malden, MA) and sophomore Ryan Raleigh (Cranston, RI) - each reached base on infield singles. Freshman Nick Politelli (Warwick, R.I.) came on in relief for Salve Regina head coach Steve Cirella, and after freshman Ben Mullin (Burlington, MA) sacrificed the runners to second and third, Politelli got junior Ryan LaPrade (Leominster, MA) to ground to third and struck out sophomore Johno Hinkell (North Adams, MA) to record his first save of the season.

Senior Justin Collet (South Portland, ME) laced a two-out, two-runs single up the middle to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead in the second.

The Lancers pushed across a run in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Nick Fluegge (Ware, MA), and the first baseman launched a solo home run to lead off the seventh and tie the game at two. Worcester State jumped ahead 3-2 in the eighth when LaPrade singled to lead off the inning and scored on a groundout by sophomore Shane Coakley (Spencer, MA).

Senior Ryan Galliher (Amherst, NY) picked up the win for the Seahawks as he pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn his first win of the season. Junior Kevin Hayes (Medford, MA) suffered the loss for the Lancers, allowing three hits and one unearned run in one inning of work.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday when they host Endicott. The doubleheader begins at noon.
