Worcester State 14, Hamilton 4
Auburndale, FL --- Junior Nick Fluegge
(Ware, MA) and sophomore Jake Sanderski (Millbury,
MA) combined for five hits and four RBIs as they helped lead
Worcester State to a 14-4 triumph over Hamilton this afternoon.
With the win the Lancers improve to 5-3-1 while the Continentals
drop to 1-5 as the game was shortened to seven innings with the
10-run rule.
Fluegge led WSC as he went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and
two RBIs while Sanderski went 2-for-3 with two runs and two runs
batted in. Senior Nick Caparell (Attleboro, MA)
and second-year Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury, MA)
also tallied two hits apiece as Caparell drove in four.
Hamilton was propelled by junior Wesley Mayberry (Alexandria, VA)
and senior Alex Augustyn (Hillsborough, CA) as they notched a pair
of base-hits.
Worcester State opened the contest with the 2-0 lead in the bottom
of the second. With men on second third, junior Ben
Mullin (Burlington, MA) notched an run producing ground
out before junior Tyler McElman (Marlboro, MA)
followed with an RBI single.
The Continentals answered and cut the advantage in half when
Mayberry knocked in freshman Sam Fuentes (Wilton, CT), who reached
with a lead-off double and moved to third on a steal.
But the Lancers would explode for seven runs over the next two
frames as they were highlighted by a two-run single by Caparell in
the third and a two-run double by Fluegge in the fourth.
Hamilton tried to rally as they plated a trio of runs over the
next two innings. Augustyn doubled in junior Pat Gennaco
(Middleton, MA) in the fifth and then they touched reliever
Chris Creen (Worcester, MA/St. Johns) for two more
in the sixth on RBIs by Gennaco and Mayberry.
Worcester State though would take control of the game with five
unanswered runs to close out the game. Caparell tripled in junior
Paul Rodriguez (San Antonio, TX) as he then scored
from third on the errant throw from the outfield in the sixth. In
the seventh the Lancers loaded the bases and then Creen hammered a
ball to left field for a bases-clearing three-base hit, which ended
the game.
WSC senior Joey Lucier (Brockton, MA) picked up
his first win of the season as his record is now 1-1. Lucier
allowed two earned runs on six hits while he walked and struck out
five.
Fourth-year Andrew Perkowski (Yorktown Heights, NY) was tagged for
his first setback of the year. Perkowski allowed nine runs (seven
earned) on nine hits in three 1/2 innings of work. He also allowed
three free passes and fanned one.
Freshman teamates Shawn Trombley (Leominster,
MA) and Nick Gezotis (Westfield, MA) also recorded
their first career hits in the seventh inning.
The Lancers will play on three consecutive games starting on
Tuesday. Worcester State hosts Newbury at 3:30 at Logan Field
before they travel to Albertus Magnus for a contest at the same
time on Wednesday. The Blue and Gold close out the school week at
WPI as the home team on Thursday at 3:30 PM.
