McDonald, Borowiec Named MASCAC Baseball Players of the Week

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Junior designated hitter Corey McDonald (Hudson, MA) and senior righthander Mike Borowiec (Spencer, MA) have each been selected as the MASCAC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for helping lead Worcester State to the MASCAC Tournament Championship and a 3-0 week.

McDonald batted .308 (4-for-13) with two homers, three runs scored and seven RBIs en route to earning MASCAC Tournament MVP honors. McDonald stroked the decisive base knocks in all three games as he jacked the go-ahead homer in a 7-4 opening round triumph over Framingham State, a key two-run homer in a 15-14 win against Westfield State in the semifinals and he drove in the winning run in their 3-2 win against the Owls in the championship.

McDonald currently tops the MASCAC in batting (.414), slugging (.707), on base percentage (.518) and total bases (94) while his eight homers ties for the league lead. McDonald is also third in RBIs (41), fourth in runs (43) and fifth in hits (55).

McDonald has been plunked by 15 pitches this season and is seven away from tying the school mark. McDonald is 26th in the NCAA Division III in the category.

Borowiec fanned six in eight innings of work as he earned the triumph in a 3-2 victory over Westfield State in the MASCAC Championship game. While Borowiec yielded 11 hits - all singles - to the Owls who lead the conference in batting (.351) and on base percentage (.432) and he used his control to allow just two earned runs. Borowiec also stranded four in scoring position and issued just one walk.

Borowiec (4-2) has posted career highs in innings (56.1) and strikeouts (47) and with six punchouts on Monday he moved into fifth on the all-time list with 139 strikeouts in 167 innings. Borowiec is fifth in innings and sixth in the MASCAC in strikeouts.

Borowiec has a career record of 15-5 while wearing a Lancer uniform.

Worcester State currently has a record of 31-9-1 and is tied for seventh in the latest New England Intercollegiate Baseball coaches poll under the direction of 15th year head coach Dr. Dirk Baker. The Blue and Gold will wait until Monday to find out who their opponent is in the NCAA Division III Tournament as they captured the MASCAC's automatic bid.

The Lancers won their fourth MASCAC Tournament Championship since the four-team competition started in 2001. WSC will make their fifth NCAA Division III apperance with the last apperance coming in 2008.
