Osburn Named To All-MASCAC Baseball First-Team

 

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Worcester State freshman Cody Osburn (Fair Oaks, CA) was named to the All-MASCAC Baseball first-team as a utility player in a vote by the league's eight coaches on Wednesday.

Osburn began the campaign as a pitcher before being used the mainly as an everyday outfielder to conclude the season.  In 23 games played, he led the team in batting average (.397), slugging percentage (.562), on base percentage (.439), runs batted in (20) and triples (3). 

He also posted a 1-1 record on the mound as he pitched 14 innings, allowed seven earned runs.  Osburn also fanned 13 batters and recorded one save.  He also finished a team-high six games for WSU.

In MASCAC games, Osburn was the only freshman within the top 10 for batting average as he was tied for seventh with an even .400 clip.  His conference slugging percentage (.625) tied him for fifth place.

Along with Nick Conti (Lynn, MA - SS) of Salem State and Mike Molta (Nantucket, MA) of Westfield State, Osburn was one of three first-year collegiate players on the 24 member All-MASCAC team.

It was in the final week of the season that Osburn stepped up to the plate as he helped lead the Lancers to five wins in their last eight games while batting .560 (14-for-24) with 10 runs and 11 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .920.

Osburn would notch five hits with a double and a triple in a sweep over Fitchburg State, he would go 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles in a triumph over Newbury before he finished the season with a trio of base-knocks, four runs and four runs driven in by taking two from Mass Maritime at Buzzards Bay.

As a pitcher, Osburn began the season strong out of the bullpen as pitched he four and 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball on the squad's spring training Florida trip with six strikeouts and a save against Curry on March 16. Osburn also earned the win in relief on April 10 in a walk-off win over Brandeis as he fanned two in an inning of work with a scoreless ninth in a tied ball game.

Osburn is also a member of the Worcester State ice hockey team as he played in 24 games, had six assists as defensemen, and helped lead them to their first postseason win in 35 years – a 4-1 upset over Fitchburg State in the conference tournament.

The Lancers posted a 15-24 record overall while finishing in fifth place in the MASCAC with a 6-8 record under the direction of 17th year head coach Dr. Dirk Baker.
