Teal, George Honored With First-Team All-MASCAC Baseball Accolades

 

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Senior Alex Teal (Malden, MA) and sophomore Zach George (Attleboro, MA) have both earned spots on the All-MASCAC first-team in a vote by the leagues eight head baseball coaches as announced by league publicist Jim Seavey on Wednesday.

Teal proved himself on the mound to be one of the most consistent hurlers in the MASCAC this season as he went 5-5 with a 1.38 earned run average to go with 59 strikeouts in 59 innings.

As of the final week of the regular season, Teal leads the MASCAC in strikeouts, while he is second in complete games, wins and ERA. In conference-only games, Teal posted three wins in five starts with a sparkling 0.86 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 32 2/3 frames of work.

Among NCAA Division III leaders, Teal is 35th in the nation in ERA and fifth in New England. Along with teammate Nick Bonofiglio (Worcester, MA/Holy Name), the pair are tied for 15th in Division III in complete games and are among six in the region who have gone the distance six or more times.

Teal is 16 innings and 18 strikeouts away from tying single-season records while his the ERA is the second-lowest total in one campaign. As a junior transfer from Fitchburg State, Teal was the MASCAC Rookie of the Year during the 2010 season and honored on the All-MASCAC second-team as a sophomore in 2011.

Fresh off his MASCAC Player of the Week accolades to finish the regular season, George posted a break-out year as the everyday right-fielder for the Lancers.

George is currently batting a MASCAC-best .416 with 42 base-knocks - 10 for doubles - to go with 22 runs and 18 runs driven in. He is second in the league in two-baggers, third in on-base percentage (.468), fourth in slugging (.554) and tied for sixth in overall base-knocks.

Over the course of his last 12 games, George enters the MASCAC Tournament on a tear, hitting for a .523 clip with 10 runs, 12 RBI, 30 total bases and seven multi-hit performances.

George is currently 61st in the NCAA Division III in batting average and he is eighth in New England.

Under the direction of 18th year head coach Dr. Dirk Baker, the fourth-seeded Blue and Gold (18-20, 8-6 MASCAC) will host #5 Bridgewater State on Thursday at 3:30 in the first round of the conference tournament in a single-elimination game.
