Three Named To All-Worcester Area Baseball Team

Worcester, MA --- Seniors Kurt Sabacinski (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) and Alex Teal (Malden, MA) along with sophomore Zach George (Attleboro, MA) have all been tabbed to the Third-Annual Worcester Area All-Star team in a vote by the local sports information directors.

Teal and George, who were also honored on the All-MASCAC First-team two weeks ago, recieved nods to the Worcester Area First-team as a right-handed starting pitcher and an outfielder, respetively, while Sabacinski earned recognition as a second-team designated hitter.

George clubbed a MASCAC-best .418 batting average and tied for the conference lead with 12 doubles. He also chipped in with 23 runs, 17 RBIs, one triple, one home run and he was fourth in the league with 62 doubles.

In addition to having 13 multiple hit games on the season - six coming in conference play - George was also third in the MASCAC with a .564 slugging percentage.

Teal went 5-5 overall with a 2.00 earned run average to go along with 64 strikeouts in 63 frames of work and he limited batters to a .242 batting average. Among league leaders, he was second in strikeouts, tied for second with six complete games and he was third in innings.

In MASCAC-only games, Teal went 3-2 with 29 punchouts in 32.2 innings with a sparkling 0.89 ERA.

Sabacinski, who was one of the clubs three captains, played primarily at catcher, but he also took reps as a first baseman and designated hitter. He batted .315 with 22 runs and 15 RBIs and nine doubles.

In MASCAC play as the starting catcher, Sabacinski hit for a .341 clip with 10 runs, eight doubles and nine runs driven in. He also helped the pitching staff post the most strikeouts in league games and the second-best team earned run average.

Sabacinski ended his career hitting .335 with the 42nd highest batting average in the Worcester State record book (84-for-251). He was also honored last week at the annual Senior Athletics Award Banquet with the "Peg Nugent" Award for academic excellence on the field and in the classroom.

The Lancers finished the season at 19-22 overall and 8-6 to tie for third place under the direction of 18th year head coach Dr. Dirk Baker. The Blue and Gold wrapped up the year as MASCAC semifinalists for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
