Leominster, MA --- Sophomore Zach Zona (Auburn, MA/St. Peter-Marian) has signed a contract to play for the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs this summer for the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.

In his first full season since transferring from Southern New Hampshire, Zona was an integral member of the Lancer rotation this past year. He went 4-3, ringing up 60 on strikeouts in 54 innings to go with a 3.40 earned run average.

Zona ranked second in the MASCAC in strikeouts, third in strikeouts per nine innings (10.00), fourth in earned runs allowed (20), fifth in innings and he tied for tenth in total victories.

To end the campaign, Zona was named to the MASCAC Honor Roll for fanning 12 over nine frames of work in a 9-6 victory against Salem State to force a deciding conference championship game in their series against the eventual champion Vikings.

First established in 2012, the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs are an expansion team of the Futures League wooden bat league which to prepares young collegiate athletes for the rigors of playing professional baseball.

After finishing in fifth place in the Western Division with a record of 26-29, the Dirt Dawgs have restocked with several talented players from several Division I, II and III institutions. Opening day is Thursday, June 4.

The Lancers have had a strong connection to summer baseball as former standout Joey Lucier pitched with the Lowell All-Americans in the NECBL for two seasons. After graduating in 2013, former All-MASCAC right hander Alex Teal was also a Pecos League All-Star and helped pace the Santa Fe Fuegos to the 2014 league title.  

Under the direction of 20th year head coach Dr. Dirk Baker, the Lancers went 27-16 and claimed a share of their eighth MASCAC Regular Season title.
