Strong Pitching Performance Downs Lancers

WORCESTER, Mass – The Worcester State University Baseball team fell 7-2 against the Albertus Magnus Falcons Thursday evening at Lyons Diamond. The Lancers dropped to 10-12 on the season while the Falcons improved to 11-11.

After a quick couple of innings, in the top of the third, freshman outfielder Nhasean Murphy (Manchester, Conn.) lead off with a single but then scored right after on a failed pick-off attempt and error. Consecutive singles by senior outfielder Tyriq Harris (Waterbury, Conn.) and senior infielder Mike Brown (New Fairfield, Conn.) put runners at first and second. The Lancers then managed to force a double play to minimize the damage as only Harris would score before the end of the inning.

The Lancers bats remained quiet through five innings. In the top of the sixth, the Falcons would strike again. Junior catcher Brandon Clark (Cheshire, Conn.) started things off with a lead off walk. Freshmen Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, Conn.) and Eduardo Pena (Hamden, Conn.) would follow up with a double and single respectively, driving in Clark. Spataj scored on a sacrifice fly to left field, increasing their lead to 4-0.

In the top of the seventh, junior Alphonse Caruso (Worcester, Mass.) came in to relieve starter Justin Pena (Mansfield, Mass) for the Lancers. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh, Spataj doubled again to clear the bases to make it 7-0.

In the bottom of the ninth, Falcon freshman Alan Stinson (Watertown, Conn.), sophomore Dan DeBartolomeo (Hamden, Conn.), junior Shawn McFeggan, senior Daunte Brinkley (Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Mike Wagner (Manchester, Conn.) had thrown a combined no-hitter to this point. The no-hit bid would be broken up by senior outfielder Mike Ferrara (Easton, Mass.) who hit a double, driving in sophomore outfielder Pat Galvin (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Another double, this time by freshman outfielder Andrew Miller (Naples, Fla.), would score Ferrara. Those would be the only runs scored for the Lancers as the Falcons would go on to secure the win.

Starting pitcher Alan Stinson (Watertown, Conn.) would get the win for the Falcons, improving to 2-1 while throwing five innings of no-hit baseball and striking out one. Meanwhile, Justin Pena (Mansfield, Mass.) would fall to 0-1 on the season, going six innings while giving up six hits, two runs, two walks, and striking out four.

The Lancers are back in action Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at home against the Framingham State Rams.
