Baseball Announces Captains for 2019 Season

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State Men’s baseball team has named three captains for the upcoming 2019 season.

Under the guidance of head coach Dirk Baker, the Lancers named senior Michael Ferrara (Easton, Mass.), junior Kenan Kolanda (Sterling, Mass.), and junior Ben Palatino (Hudson, Mass.) their leaders for 2019.

“The young guys are pushing the older guys, and the older guys are pushing the older guys which is great to see,” Ferrara said. “We have a young pitching staff that is excited to get going.” As a junior, Ferrara led the Lancers with four home runs and 31 runs batted in last season.

Palatino, a First Team MASCAC All-Conference selection from a season ago, led Worcester State with a .356 batting average, and turned 13 double plays. “This is the most tight knit and together the team has ever been,” said Palatino, “our line up has a lot of experience this year that can hopefully lead us to making a run.”

Kolanda anchored the Lancers infield with a .947 fielding percentage, while adding 45 putouts and 45 assists. "We have a group of hungry underclassmen to mix in with a solid group of returning players,” Kolanda said. “We have to improve on last year’s season and I think we can compete well in the MASCAC this year. "

The Lancers open up the season in March with eight games in Florida over Spring Break. Dates, times, and opponents are yet to be determined.
