Lancers Run into Red-Hot Roger Williams

Lancers Run into Red-Hot Roger Williams

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Roger Williams University baseball continued their best start in program history as they defeated Worcester State University 12-1 in seven innings on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

The game was interrupted by a rain delay of nearly an hour, but then ended via the ten-run rule after 7 innings as the Hawks improved to 7-0 and the Lancers dropped to 2-5.

Roger Williams scored a run in the first and then added four more in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead before adding another four-spot in the fifth.

Worcester State scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on two straight singles by Thomas Halliwell (Leominster, Mass.) and Alex Sorenti-Burns (Sagamore Beach, Mass.). Halliwell came around to score on a balk by Matt Hynes (Farmingdale, N.Y.), who got the victory after throwing four and two-thirds innings.

Halliwell and Sean Whitney-Dutton (Leominster, Mass.) were both 2-3 for the Lancers, together accounting for 2/3 of their offense.

Jack Morin (N. Andover, Mass.) drove in Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) with an infield single after Cedeno had led off the game with a double down the left field line off of Worcester State starter Cole Glassburn (Hopkinton, Mass.).

Glassburn went three innings and allowed five runs on five hits while striking out five. Hynes walked five and allowed five hits, but Worcester State stranded 9 batters who reached base.

Cedeno opened the third with another hit and scored the first of four runs for the Hawks, who plated two in the frame on a bases-loaded single through the right side by Alec Lavallee (Cumberland, R.I.).

Three of the four runs in the fifth were unearned, with Lavallee collecting another RBI with a single down the right field line. The Hawks took advantage of an error, a hit by pitch, and a wild pitch to build their lead to 9-0.

Roger Williams tacked on three more in the top of the seventh, which was paused because of thunder in the area.

The Lancers are back at Lake Myrtle Sports Park tomorrow evening when they play North Park (IL) at 5:00 PM.

Roger Williams plays a doubleheader against Maine Farmington on Friday, starting at 9:45 AM.
