Curry 28, Worcester State 21 OT
Worcester, MA --- Curry senior running back Joseph Freeman (Lowell, MA) scored the go-ahead touchdown with a 22-yard reception to help lead the Colonels past Worcester State, 28-21 in overtime. Curry extends its winning streak to 31 games against NEFC opponents while tonight's contest marks the season opener for both teams.
Down 21-14 with 4:47 left to go in the game, Lancers quarterback Pat Good (Hull, MA) converted two back-to-back fourth down conversions on a 11-yard grab by Luke Cerretani (Melrose, MA) and a 14-yard haul by Jason Patterson (Attleboro, MA). With a fresh set of downs, Good tossed a 14-yard reception to Patterson on third-and-10 and then ran into the end zone with a two-yard plunge to tie the game with 34 seconds left in regulation.
The Colonels promptly scored to start their first possession on Freeman's touchdown. Following a pass-interference penalty on the defense, junior linebacker Jason Madden (Sharon, MA) and defensive end Mike Murray (Brockton, MA) sacked Good for a key 12-yard loss. Curry then held the Lancers for a four-and-out possession's to end the game.
Worcester State started the scoring early on a 22-yard flick from Good to junior Dave Salvi (Bedford, MA) with 10:46 left to go in the first quarter. The visitors answered back on a 14-yard run by senior quarterback Ryan Van De Giesen (N. Attleboro) at the four minute mark.
Salvi hauled in another six points on a 36-yard pass from Good with 12:26 left to go before the intermission. Freedman knotted the score at 14-14 when he scampered across the goal-line with a one-yard run (6:24).
Both teams would come out of the locker room and play sensational defense in the third quarter. Curry made the score 21-14 and topped off a 14-play drive when Freedman rumbled into the end zone with a three-yard score.
The Lancers were led by Good who had 212 yards in the air while junior tailback Will Earley (Fitchburg, MA) rushed 20 times for 85 yards on the ground. Salvi finished the game with four receptions for 76 yards and two touchdowns while Patterson added six catches for 52 yards.
Freeman paced the Colonels with 80 total yards and three touchdowns while Van De Giessen registered 140 yards passing to go along with 14 rushes for 53 yards. Senior Shawn Perkins (Phippsburg, ME) and junior classmates Jon Sughrue (Fredmont, NH) and Jamaal Woods (Malden, MA) combined for 139 rushing yards this evening.
WSC was led by junior defensive end Greg Benoit (Dorchester, MA) who tallied 10 solo tackles while senior safety Matt Leeds (Bellingham, MA) finished with 5.5 tackles (4.5 for a loss) to go along with one sack. Sophomore linebacker Tyler Russell (Princeton, MA) added seven stops and two pass breakups.
Murray was outstanding for Curry as he finished with 7.5 tackles, 2.5 for a loss and 1.5 sacks. Junior linebacker Daniel Dawson (Stoneham, MA) notched eight solo tackles (three for a loss) while classmate Scott Driscoll (Milton, MA) was a force in the secondary with two interceptions, a pass breakup and 6.5 tackles.
Both teams will continue their schedule with games on Saturday. Worcester State will travel to cross-town rival WPI on Saturday at 1 o'clock while the Colonels host Fitchburg State at 7 PM.
