Bumpus Captures Division II/III Golden Helmet Player of the Week Award

Cambridge, MA --- Junior Kevin Bumpus (Bridgewater, MA) has been distinguished with this week's New England Football Writers Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Division II/III Golden Helmet for his stellar aerial performance in a season-opening victory over Anna Maria.

Bumpus went 20-for-35 with a school-record 427 passing yards and four touchdowns without an interception in a 34-6 triumph over the AMCATS. Bumpus was recognized as the MASCAC Offensive Player of the Week.

For the contest, Bumpus averaged an amazing 21.4 yards per completion – with six or more going 30-plus yards – and 12 of the Lancers 19 offensive first downs came through the air. The passing effort this past weekend was the sixth-highest total in Division III.

The previous program standard for passing yardage came last season when Corey Spencer tossed 421 yards and three TDs in a 28-14 win against Fitchburg State.

Bumpus, who transferred in from Assumption last season, won the starting job after a strong spring.

While with the Greyhounds as a true freshman in 2011, Bumpus amassed 1,550 yards of total offense and 10 touchdowns including 1,220 yards passing and five scores in eight games en route to Worcester Area Offensive Rookie of the Year accolades.

The last WSU football player to be garnered with Division II/III Golden Helmet laurels was Izzy Ayala when he rushed eight times for 179 yards and finished with four touchdowns in a win against Mass Maritime during the 2004 season.

The honor marks the 13th time that a Worcester State student-athlete has received laurels since the 1987 campaign.

Worcester State will host WPI on Friday night in their home opener at 7 PM.
