Holmes Scores In Loss To WestConn

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers (1-6, 1-4 MASCAC) kicked off against the WestConn Wolves (5-2, 5-1 MASCAC) this afternoon at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field in the teams rescheduled game from Saturday.

FINAL:

Lancers 10

WestConn 58

RECAP:

The Lancers received the ball to start the game with WestConn forcing Worcester to punt on their first possession. With the wet and rainy game conditions,  first-year punter Kyle Areias (Hudson, Mass.) unfortunately mishandled the ball, allowing WestConn to take possession of the ball deep inside Lancer territory.

The Wolves punished the turnover as Chad Blasky rushed for a seven-yard touchdown with 11:41 remaining in the first to make the score 7-0 after the successful point-after touchdown.

WestConn pinned Worcester to their own 11-yard line on the kickoff following their touchdown. The Lancers drove 89 yards as junior running back Nico Holmes (Mansfield, Mass.) capped off the impressive drive with a two-yard rush for the score with 5:02 remaining in the first. First year Sete Deletoile (Taunton, Mass.) tied the game at 7-7 on the PAT.

On the following drive, WestConn's wide receiver Julian Ferguson would catch a TD from quarterback Keion Jones on a deep throw for a 34-yard TD with 1:04 remaining in the first, the score 14-7.

WestConn's Deshaun Hardy-Walker intercepted a pass from a scrambling Mike Loveless (Nashua, N.H.) to regain possession for the Wolves. With the turnover, the Wolves would capitalize on Worcester's mistake as the team punched in their third TD of the half, this time with Jones hooking up with Ferguson for their second score of the game on a 22-yard score. The score now 21-7 with 14:02 remaining in the half.

Worcester received the ball on the 35-yard line the next possession, capping off a six-play 58-yard drive with a 31-yard field goal from Santiago Rodriguez-D'Atri (Leominster, Mass.) to make it a 21-10 game as 11:08 remained in the half.

WestConn would once again answer the Lancers with a TD on a six-play 53-yard drive, the score coming on a six-yard rush from Jones to make it 28-10 with 8:08 remaining in the second quarter.

Under a minute remained in the half when WestConn's Chad Blaszky rushed for a 33-yard TD to increase his team's lead to 35-10 heading into halftime.

The Wolves started the second half off hot as Jones and Ferguson would find the endzone for the third time on a 49-yard deep pass to grow the lead to 42-10.

Worcester State made a defensive stop on their own six to force the Wolves to only a field goal and a score of 45-10 with 5:10 remaining in the third.

With a new quarterback under center, WestConn's Dylan Jackson completed a 33-yard touchdown to receiver Rich Stanya to make it 51-10.

The WestConn Wolves added another touchdown to their total as Jackson tossed his second score of the game to Kevin Francesch, making the score 58-10 with 3:43 remaining in the game.

With the loss, the Lancers drop to a record of (1-7, 1-5 MASCAC), while WestConn improves to (6-2, 6-1 MASCAC).

The team's next game will be away at Westfield on Saturday, November 4th with a 12 p.m. kickoff in a conference matchup against the Owls.
