Lancers Soar Above Falcons in Second Straight Victory

Lancers Soar Above Falcons in Second Straight Victory

Worcester, MA- The Lancer football team (1-1, 1-0) travels for their first road trip of the season this afternoon as they make the quick trip north to Fitchburg State as they look to continue their success in conference play with their second straight win of the season.

Final

Worcester State: 20

Fitchburg State: 14

How it Happened:

The Lancers would come out quick in the scoring arena of this sloppy weather game as they would go 65 yards down the field on seven plays to end it with a junior quarterback Cam Ayotte (Millbury, MA) pass to senior wide receiver Dylan Hall (Plainville, CT) in the back of the endzone from 22 yards. The extra point would be good, grabbing the early 7-0 lead for Worcester State.

The Falcons would tie up on the next play as their quarterback Rock Marchitelli would toss in a pass from eight yards to cut the lead to 7-6, with the extra point making it a 7-7 game.

Two back to back punts would still see the score 7-7 before Worcester would close out the first quarter with a field goal attempt that was ultimately blocked by the Falcon defense. The second quarter would see Fitchburg grab their lone lead of the game as Reshawn Stewart would run the ball around the corner for six yards into the endzone, with the extra point wrapping up the play to make it 14-7. The score would remain into the halftime break.

Following the break in play, Worcester would equal the score as senior Nico Holmes (Mansfield, MA) would go for distance, rushing for a 42 yard touchdown to wrap up a four play 57 yard drive for Worcester. With just two minutes remaining in the third, and a solid ground game overcoming the questionable weather enveloping the field, Worcester would grab another touchdown off Holmes, this time a five yarder to set the score at 20-14.

Defense was the main focus of the fourth quarter for Worcester as they worked to shut down any possible counter from the Falcons, forcing two punts and a turnover on downs before taking a knee to wrap up their second straight win of the season.

The Lancers would go for 308 yards of total offense versus the Falcons 261 with Ayotte throwing for 138 yards, rushing for 25 and a touchdown, while Holmes would go for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Senior John McMasters III (Raynham, MA) led the team with eight solo tackles and eight assists for a total of 16 and an interception on the day.
