Westfield State 2, Worcester State 1
Westfield, MA --- Senior forward Kate Moss (Auburn, MA)
scored the game-winning goal as Westfield State rallied for a 2-1
victory over Worcester State in the conference field hockey opener
on Sept. 12.
Worcester (1-3, 0-1) controlled action in the first half,
out-shooting Westfield, 5-1. The Lancers scored 3:37 into the game
on an unassisted goal by Samantha Janda (Sterling,
MA) following a penalty corner.
But the Owls (2-1, 1-0) dominated the second-half action,
ou-tshooting the Lancers, 6-1. Junior Amanda Burns (Hillsdale, NY)
scored the game-tying goal 1:21 into the second half with an assist
from sophomore Jessi Gould (Canton, MA).
Burns and Gould also played pivotal roles in the game-winning goal.
Following some nice stick handling, Burns pushed a crossing pass
from the sidelines about 10 yards in front of the goal.
The Worcester State goalkeeper Katherine
Masterjohn (Warren, MA) came out to defend the pass
and collided with Gould; both Gould and the goalie hit the turf.
Moss took control of the loose ball and hit it into the open goal
with 24:25 remaining in the second half.
Masterjohn ended the contest with one save while her counterpart, sophomore Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, MA) stopped four of the five shots she saw in the cage.
Worcester State will travel to Anna Maria for a 7 PM contest on the road on Tuesday before continuing Little East play with their first home match against Fitchburg State at 2:30. Westfield will host Trinity at 7 PM on Tuesday and head on the road for a 7 PM matchup with WNEC on Thursday.
