Field Hockey Drops Road Contest to Southern Maine

Gorham, ME ---  Freshmen forwards Bethany Schleh (Gorham, ME) and Kailey Bubier (Auburn, ME) each scored a goal to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 win over the Worcester State College Lancers in a Little East Conference field hockey game Wednesday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham.

Earning their second consecutive win, the Huskies improves to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the Little East.  Worcester State falls to 3-7 and remains winless in the LEC at 0-4. 

Schleh tallied the game-winner just two minutes into the game when she tapped in an assist from sophomore back Bethany Bougie (Sanford, ME).  The goal was Schleh's sixth of the season while Bougie passed off her fourth assist.

The 1-0 USM lead stood through the half and late into the second half before Bubier knocked in an insurance goal in the 62nd minute.  Bubier one-timed a shot for her team-leading seventh goal of the season following solid individual effort from senior forward India Lowe (Gloucester, MA).  The assist is Lowe's team-best sixth of the season.

Worcester State made a push midway through the second half, rattling off several good chance while earning four consecutive penalty corners; however, USM senior goalkeeper Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, ME) was able to prevent a goal.  Hill finished the game with two saves, while Husky sophomore defender Heather Gilman (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence) cleared a ball off the line for a defensive save in the first half.  

Worcester State sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Masterjohn (Warren, Mass./Quaboag) played well in goal for the Lancers making nine saves. 

The Huskies held a 20-7 shot advantage while the Lancers held a 9-8 edge in penalty corners.

Southern Maine travels to Westfield State on Saturday (3:30 p.m.).  Worcester State is at Bridgewater State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
