Bridgewater, MA --- Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Lannon (Swampscott, MA) notched her first goal of the season to lift the Bridgewater State College field hockey team to a 1-0 Little East Conference win over Worcester State College this afternoon at Swenson Field in Bridgewater.

With the win, the Bears improve to 7-4 on the season and 5-2 in the Little East standings. Worcester dips to 3-10 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

Lannon scored off a penalty corner in the 12th minute of play as she picked up a loose ball in front of the goal, stick-handled in and drove a shot inside the left post.

Worcester’s best opportunity came in the opening minutes of the second half as sophomore defender Molly Cotter (North Easton, MA) was stopped on a penalty stroke try by BSC junior netminder Katie Weber (Arlington, MA).

Weber made just the one save as she recorded her sixth shutout of the season. Worcester State sophomore goaltender Katherine Masterjohn (Warren, MA) turned aside six shots between the pipes for the Lancers.

Bridgewater outshot Worcester by a margin of 15-4 and also held a 13-6 advantage in penalty corners. The Bears are now 17-18 all-time versus the Lancers since the two teams first met back in 1971.

BSC will travel to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday for a five o’clock Little East match with the Colonials. Worcester will head to New England College on Thursday afternoon (3:30 PM) for a non-conference game with the Pilgrims.
