Team Effort Propels Field Hockey To Road Win At WPI

Worcester State 4, WPI 2

Worcester, MA --- Junior Samantha Janda (Sterling, MA) and classmate Sarah Cozzens (Lancaster, MA) each notched a goal and an assist to lift Worcester State to a 4-2 road victory over WPI in a non-conference field hockey tilt on Tuesday evening.  With the win, the Lancers up their record to 4-3 overall while the Engineers level their mark at 4-4.

The combination of Janda and Cozzens hooked up 8:35 into the contest when Janda tapped in a feed by Cozzens to give the Lancers a 1-0 advantage.

Less than three minutes later WPI evened the match when junior Danielle Antonellis (Duxbury, MA) slid a pass to third-year Sasha Marokhovsky (Upton, MA), who arced a shot into the upper right corner of the net.

WSU went ahead 2-1 early in the 21st minute when senior Megan Feehan (Lunenburg, MA) connected from six yards out on a setup by Janda. The hosts answered again at 26:57 as sophomore Megan Read (Wrentham, MA) fed classmate Maggie Wigley (Bridgewater, MA) for her third goal of the season.

The two teams looked like they would go into the locker room tied at the half, but senior Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, MA) collected a deflection off a rebound and potted what proved to be the game-winning goal with just 21 seconds remaining before intermission.

The second half saw few scoring chances for both teams.  Worcester State sealed the victory with just under seven minutes remaining when Cozzens blasted an unassisted goal from the right side. WSU had two penalty corners in the waning seconds, the second of which saw a highlight reel defensive save by WPI's junior Katye Milligan (Skowhegan, ME).

Junior Kat Masterjohn (Warren, MA) earned the save in net for the Lancers, making six stops. Sophomore Aly Caceres (Fall River, MA) was credited with three saves for the Engineers, who outshot the visitors 12-8 and enjoyed a 9-5 edge in penalty corners.

WPI is off until next Tuesday, when it wraps up a five-game homestand with a 7 PM showdown against Nichols.  Worcester State is back in action on Thursday, hosting Becker at 7 PM.
