Field Hockey Drops LEC Contest To UMass Dartmouth, 1-0

UMass Dartmouth 1, Worcester State 0

North Dartmouth, MA --- Sophomore forward Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA) scored the lone goal as UMass Dartmouth defeated Worcester State, 1-0, in Little East Conference field hockey action this evening. With the win the Corsairs improve to 8-4 overall and remain unbeaten at 6-0 in the LEC while the Lancers even out to 6-6 and 3-3 in the conference.

Both squads maintained back-and-forth action during a drizzly first half of play. There were limited scoring opportunities for each team, resulting in a 0-0 score at the break.

The Corsairs struck late in the second half when Taylor converted a pass from senior defender Becca Festinger (Greenfield, MA) into the back of the goal, giving UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead with 8:00 left to play in the game.

The UMass Dartmouth defense held strong in the final minutes to secure the 1-0 victory.

Junior Kat Masterjohn (Warren, MA) stopped four shots in the net for the Lancers while freshman Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA) notched a trio of saves. WSU sophomore Lauren Daley (Dedham, MA) also recorded her seventh defensive save in the setback as she is now tied with UMD junior Marie Lynch-Gillbert (Petetersham, MA) who added two of her own in the contest.

The Corsairs held a slim 8-6 edge in shots while they also led in corners, 13-3.

Worcester State plays three out of their next four at home starting with Salem State on Saturday at 4 PM while UMD will travel to Western Connecticut for a 1 PM showdown.
