Chris Pothier Tabbed New Field Hockey Coach

Worcester, MA --- Director of Athletics Sue Chapman has announced that Chris Pothier will take the reins of the Worcester State University field hockey team. Pothier becomes the 11th head coach since the program was established in 1970 as he replaces Susie Whelan who left to pursue a full-time employment opportunity.

"We are extremely excited to have Chris join our staff," said Chapman. "He will bring a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and knowledge to the field hockey program and we look forward to his contributions in the upcoming season."

Pothier begins his first stint as a head coach at the collegiate level. Last season he served as the top assistant at Elms College. Pothier was primarily responsible for assisting with recruiting, day-to-day office tasks and film coordination.

Before taking on his role with the Blazers, Pothier was at Springfield College for one season as a graduate assistant coach. While with the Pride in 2010, he helped guide Springfield to the NEWMAC Tournament Semifinals.

Following his senior year of high school, Pothier played on the USA Men's National Field Hockey junior team from 2004-05 before he earned a spot on the senior indoor and outdoor teams during the 2005-06 campaign.

In high school, Pothier was a standout player at Sandwich High and a captain in his senior year. In 2001, Pothier helped pace the Blue Knights to the MIAA State Semifinals.

Since 2006, Pothier has served as the director and owner of the Cape Ann Coalition, a Premier Field Hockey Club of New England. He is involved with a wide range of participants from intermediate level to national quality athletes.

Pothier is currently taking classes to achieve his Masters of Education in Physical Education with a concentration in Advanced Coaching from Springfield College. Pothier recently earned his Level II Certification from the USFHA in the summer of 2012.
