Field Hockey Defeated By Cross Town Rival Clark, 3-1

Worcester, MA --- Clark senior Mel Melkonian (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) notched two goals to help lead the Cougars to a 3-1 victory over Worcester State in non-conference field hockey action this evening at Coughlin Field.

Clark (7-5) used two early goals to stake the early 2-0 advantage.

Melkonian potted her first marker of the game off a rebounded shot at the 4:37 mark and then fourth-year Madeline Lutts (Salem, MA) netted her 13th tally of the year less than 11 minutes later when she stick handled the ball from midfield and chipped the shot past WSU's netminder.

Sophomore Katelyn Abber (Dedham, MA) cut into the lead with her second marker of the campaign as she helped the Blue and Gold respond with 22:00 on the clock as she added her second goal of the season off a saved shot by classmate Kelli McPherson (Mansfield, MA).

But the Cougars tacked on an insurance goal 53 seconds into the second half on the 24th goal of the season by Melkonian. She slipped behind the defense and scored on a breakaway.

Worcester State (2-10) senior Rebecca Mullen (Peaobdy, MA) finished with 16 saves in the setback while junior Jordannah Saunders (Scarborough, ME) saved four of the five shots she saw on net.

Melkonian and McPhearson both finished with a defensive save each for their respective team.

Clark led in shots 21-7 and they also held the slight edge in penalty corners, 8-7.

Worcester State continues their homestand with New England College on Thursday at 7 PM while the Cougars head to WPI for a NEWMAC battle against the Engineers on Saturday at 1 o'clock.
