Field Hockey Falls To Salem State, 3-2, In Double-Overtime Thriller

Salem, MA --- Salem State freshman Katie Pietrini (Beverly, MA) scored twice, including the game-winner in double-overtime, to lead the Vikings to their fifth straight victory, 3-2, over Worcester State this afternoon at Alumni Field.

Salem State runs their record to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the Little East Conference while the Lancers drop to 6-2 and 1-2 in league play.

The Lancers had several scoring opportunities early on, including one in front of the net, but Vikings' first-year netminder Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, MA) kept Worcester off the scoreboard until sophomore Julie O'Rourke (Worcester, MA) ripped a shot from 10 yards out to give the Lancers the 1-0 lead at 19:15.

Pietrini answered two minutes later for Salem State to make it a 1-1 game at the half.

After Salem State hit the post off a corner, WSU freshman Meghan Pini (Natick, MA) went the other way and put the ball past Woodin to regain the lead for Worcester State at the 46:09 mark.

The Vikings countered right away when senior Lauren Pazdziorny (Middleton, MA) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year on an assist from classmate Stephanie Morrison (Beverly, MA) to knot the game at two with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Vikings had a flurry of chances late, but could not convert, and the game went into go to overtime.

In the first overtime, the Lancers had four breakaway attempts, but Morrison and Woodin were stout defensively to keep the game even.

Finally in the second overtime, Pazdziorny led Pietrini with a perfect pass on a two-on-one, and Pietrini netted the game-winner from five yards out to end the game in the 88th minute.

Both goalies played well with Woodin stopping 15 shots for the Vikings, and sophomore Amanda Carpenter (Lunenburg, MA) making eight saves for the Lancers.

The shots were 11-4 in the first half; 16-14 in the second half in favor of the Lancers.

The Lancers led in shots 21-16 while both squads had 14 penalty corners.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday with Salem State traveling to Southern Maine at 4 PM and Worcester State returning home to take on UMass Dartmouth at 7 PM.
