Worcester Falls in Overtime Comeback to Owls

Worcester, MA- The Lancer Field Hockey squad (0-5, 0-0) open up conference play this afternoon as they begin their bid to claim back to back MASCAC Championships. While WOrcester is on the hunt for their first win this season, they have already tested themselves with strong competition in the early part of the season to prepare themselves for a strong conference season that sees each team play each other twice, one home and one away.

Final

Worcester State:2

Westfield State:3

How it Happened:

Worcester got a glimpse of offensive scoring early on in this conference battle. Despite an apparent lack of shot attempts, senior forward Natayla Morin (Barre, MA) would grab a goal and the 1-0 lead for the Lancers. That would be it offensively for the Lancers in the first but their determination and aggressiveness on defense would keep Westfield out of the point column.

Second period would see the score remain at 1-0 as senior goalkeeper Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA) would have a great second period. Despite only recording four saves the Owls would have had 14 shots but Ferrara and her defense would take care of keeping goals out of her net to keep the lead early.

The third quarter would portend more of the same, but in the 38' minute the Owls were finally able to find a gap in the defensive pressure, tying the game up at 1. In the crucial next two minutes Westfield would capitalize on their momentum, recording a second goal in quick succession.

Four quarter action would see Worcester record their second goal of the game as Morin would score her second goal of the game with under 2 minutes to go to tie the game at 2 and send it into overtime. It would take five minutes into the OT period to break the stalemate between the two teams, but a goal from Westfield would close out the game at 3-2.

Ferrara would end the game with 11 saves while Morin would record the two goals and 5 shots on cage for Worcester.

What's Next:
