Worcester State Loses To Newbury, 67-66

Newbury 67, Worcester State 66

Box Score

Brookline, MA --- The Newbury College Men's basketball team continued on its winning streak in 2008 with a one point win over Worcester State College tonight, by a score of 67-66.  The score teetered back and forth the entire game, with neither team taking more than a few point lead at any time.  Even down to the last minute of the game, both teams had the opportunity to take the lead, but it was the Nighthawks who came through with intense defense and clutch foul shooting to take the win.

In the final minute of the game with the score at 65-64, Arch Mitchell (Framingham, MA) gave the Nighthawks a 3 point lead by hitting two foul shots in a double-bonus situation.  The Lancers answered back 15 seconds later when Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) hit both free throws in a 1 and 1 situation and brought it within just a one point lead for Newbury.  With possession of the ball and the score in their favor, the Nighthawks attempted to run the clock down without allowing the Lancers another chance at scoring.  The Lancers weren't ready to give up though and forced a Nighthawk turnover to gain possession and attempt two shots in the final seconds of the game, both of which were unsuccessful.

Despite the loss tonight, Worcester State's Ryan Frassica (Brockton, MA) was the games high scorer with 20 points, including 3 three-pointers.  Also playing well for the Lancers was Josh Barry (Sheffield, MA) who made his mark on the boards, collecting 14 rebounds.  Javon Mathis (West Hartford, CT) and Kevin Cleveland (Lynn, MA) lead the Nighthawks, each with a double-double, combining for 29 points and 25 boards.

The Nighthawks are now 7-5 this season, and will look to continue their winning streak against Southern Vermont College, at Hellenic College, on Saturday, January 29th, at 2:00 p.m.
