Lancers Cruise to 75-64 Win Over Fitchburg State

Worcester, MA --- Junior guard Elijah Sims (Worcester, MA) recorded 11 points with seven rebounds, four assists and five steals to help pace Worcester State in a well-balanced effort this evening with a 75-64 victory over Fitchburg State in MASCAC Men’s Basketball action at Lancer Gymnasium.

The Lancers (12-11, 5-5 MASCAC) have now swept the season series against the Falcons (7-13, 1-8 MASCAC) with a 90-80 win coming earlier this season in Fitchburg.

Junior Maurice Horton (Detroit, MI) tallied 12 points with five rebounds while freshman Raheem Lewis (Whitinsville, MA) notched a game-best 15 points. Junior Darren Schmidt (Shelburne Falls, MA) and sophomore Ryan Testagrossa (Athol, MA) also contributed nine and eight points, respectively.

Fitchburg State was led by senior Brian Skiffington (North Adams, MA) junior Colin London (Worcester, MA) who registered 11 points apiece while fourth-year Jeffery Kozik (Auburn, MA) had a good all-around game with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

After a trey by Testragrossa at 11:38 in the opening half to make the score 16-12, the Falcons got within one on a Skiffington three-pointer and took the 17-16 lead with 9:42 left in the period.

The game then went back and forth with three lead changes and two ties over the next four minutes, but the Lancers ended the battle as they took control of the contest with a shot from downtown by Sims with 4:50 left (26-23). Worcester State go on would end the half with a 12-5 spurt to lead to lead at the half 38-28.

Worcester State opened the second stanza with a 13-5 run over the first six minutes to lead 53-33 and extend their largest lead to 59-36 at 11:42. WSC would never give-up its double-digit lead for the rest of the contest as they cruised ahead the easy victory.

Fitchburg State connected for 39% from the floor in the contest while the Lancers finished 46% from the field. The Falcons also were just six of 25 from beyond the arc in the contest.

WSC edged FSC out in rebounds (37-31), points in the paint (24-18) and points off of turnovers (21-17).

Both teams will entertain MASCAC opponents on Saturday for their next game. The Lancers host first-place Bridgewater State at 6 PM, who are in the midst of a ten game win streak, while the Falcons face off against Salem State at 3.
