Men's Basketball Cages Cardinals, 61-54

Rochester, NY --- Junior classmates Robert Hunter (St. Louis, MO) and Dane Jobst (Athol, MA) each registered double-double performances to help Worcester State knock off St. John Fisher in non-conference men's basketball action this afternoon.

Hunter dropped in a team high 14 points to go along with ten rebounds while Jobst recorded 13 points to go along with 12 boards of his own.

Senior Monte Goodwin (Boston, MA) also had a double-digit scoring effort adding ten points for the Blue and Gold.

The Cardinals were paced by senior Jason Norsen (Hamburg, NY) who scored a game high 20 points to go along with eight caroms in the defeat.

Worcester State (5-2) got off to a quick start jumping out to an early 20-6 lead midway through the opening half of action.

Freshman Alex Lopez (Springfield, MA) opened the scoring when he was able to tickle the twine from behind the arc for the first bucket of the game, and Jobst closed out the run with a made lay-up with 9:58 left to play in the half.

St. John Fisher (5-3), however, went on an 8-0 run over the final 5:33 of the first half bookended by a pair of layups by Norsen and sophomore Ryan Dalton (Red Hook, NY) to pull to within four, 25-21, at the break.

The Cardinals continued to fight in the second half not allowing the Lancers to extend their lead past 10 points at any time.

When sophomore Adam Ambielli's long two-pointer fell at the 3:10 mark it got Fisher to within two points of the lead at 52-50.

However, the Blue and Gold would go on a 9-4 run over the final three minutes of action including two clutch free throws by Lopez with six seconds remaining to make it a three possession game, 61-54, and all but end Fisher's hopes.

Worcester State outshot St. John Fisher 42 percent (21-for-50) to 33 percent (21-for-63) despite the 46 percent performance in the second half (13-for 28) by the hosts the Lancers also held the slight edge in overall rebounds at 39-35.

The Blue and Gold return to action on Tuesday when they host Nichols at 8 PM, while St. John Fisher takes a week off before facing up against Pittsburg Bradford at 2 PM on Saturday.
