Ice Hockey Knocks Off UMass Dartmouth with 5-3 MASCAC victory

Auburn, MA --- Sophomore Pat Styckiewicz (Chicopee, MA) sent in the game-winning goal in the second period as the Worcester State defeated UMass Dartmouth this evening 5-2 in MASCAC action at Horgan Rink.

With the win the Lancers improve to 3-4 and 1-2 in the conference while the Corsairs even out to 3-3-1 and 0-3-1 in the MASCAC.

The first stanza proved to be a back and forth battle with five of the games eight goals being tallied in the first 20 minutes. 

The Corsairs started the scoring when junior Jason Stahl (Londonberry, NH) sounded the siren with his third marker of the season at 7:29.  Worcester State knotted the score at 1-1 when sophomore Andrew Brady (Oreland, PA) put one through the posts 2 ½ minutes later.

UMD answered right back with a tally from forward Giancario Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ) to go up 2-1, before WSC rounded the period out with markers from sophomore Chris Wallin (Avon, CT) and senior Mark Rintel (Oakland Gardens, NY) in a span of four minutes to close the opening stanza. The tally from Rintel was his sixth of the season, which leads the team.

Styckiewicz's goal came on a power play as WSC took the 4-2 lead early on in the second period as Rintel and Wallin were in on the assists at 7:07.  Sophomore Cody Warila (Shirley, MA) got in on the action as he added some insurance with his first goal of the season ten minutes later.

UMass Dartmouth tried to rally as they cut into the lead 26 seconds into the third period on Stahl's second marker of the contest, but the Lancer defense and freshman goalkeeper TJ Cuneo (Woodbridge, VA) held off the Corsiars he stopped all nine shots he saw for the rest of the period.

Cuneo improves his record to 2-0 between the posts as he registered 31 saves for WSC while senior Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA) turned aside 18 shots for the visitors.

The Lancers continue MASCAC play when they look to even up their conference record against Fitchburg State on Saturday at 4 PM while UMass Dartmouth travels to Stonehill on Tuesday at 7.
