Ice Hockey Loses 3-2 To UMass Dartmouth

North Dartmouth, MA --- University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team raced to a 3-0 lead and held off visiting Worcester State, 3-2, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Thursday evening.

Senior forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH) gave UMass Dartmouth the early lead when he scored twice in the first period. With the Corsairs enjoying a man advantage, he took a pass from senior defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC) and fired a shot from the lower edge of the face-off circle past WSU freshman goalie Taylor Fant (Denver, CO) at the 13:02 mark. Senior forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA) also assisted.

Stahl broke in again and scored at the 18:16 mark to make it 2-0. Horgan and sophomore Ricky Miller (Colorado Springs, CO) assisted.

Freshman forward Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, MA) gave the Corsairs a 3-0 lead in the second period. Ruddock re-directed home a pass from Manning at the 13:20 mark.

The Lancers scored a pair of power play goals in the third period to close the gap. Junior forward John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA) tipped in a shot from the point by sophomore defenseman Tim Bowman (Moorpark, CA) at 10:44 to make it 3-1. Freshman forward Ryan Quirk (Brockton, MA) scored, with an assist from Bowman, at 19:19 to make it 3-2. But the Corsairs held the Lancers off the rest of the way.

The Corsairs out shot the Lancers, 31-21. Senior goalie Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 19 saves for UMD while Fant stopped 23 shots for WSU.

The Corsairs improved to 5-1-1 and 3-0-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while the Lancers fell to 2-2-3 and 1-1-1 in the MASCAC with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Stonehill Saturday at 4:30. Worcester State will host Fitchburg State Saturday on 7:30 PM.
