Ice Hockey Ends Skid With 6-2 Triumph Over Westfield State

Westfield, MA --- Senior Chris Wallin (Avon, CT) had two goals and an assist and freshman Ryan Quirk (Brockton, MA) recorded three assists to lead Worcester State University to a 6-2 men's ice hockey victory over Westfield State University on Saturday evening, Jan. 29

Worcester, which led 3-2 after two periods, improved to 8-6-3 overall and 5-5-1 in the MASCAC; Westfield is 2-14-2 and 1-9-1 in league play.

Worcester State jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals from junior Cole Motz (Kremmling, CO) and Wallin in a span of 27 seconds. Westfield State knotted the score with late first-period goals from junior Jimmy Alexander (Hackettstown, NJ) and sophomore Jason Nelson (Raleigh, NC).

Third-year John Cahalane (Tewkbsury, MA) scored the game-winning goal on a power play 11:38 into the second period for his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Wallin added an insurance tally 5:43 into the third periodf and the Lancers scored two empty net goals in the closing minutes.

Wallin became the 56th player in school history to reach the 50 point milestone this evening.

Westfield State outshot Worcester State, 48-36, with Lancer junior Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, NY) recording 46 saves in the win.

Both squads continue league play on Tuesday when the Lancers travel to Salem State for a  7:30 faceoff while the Owls entertain Plymouth State at 7:35 PM.
